Rowena Kosher (they/them)—that’s me!—is a queer, nonbinary academic, consultant, writer, and advocate based in Brooklyn, NY. I hold a Bachelors of the Arts in Human Rights and Gender & Sexuality Studies from Columbia University School of General Studies.
Academically, I have special interest in sociological theory regarding gender identity and sexuality, including queer networks of community care, identity development, and gender as embedded in the quotidian--from language to embodiment. My research explores these topics, most recently focusing on language use by and the experiences of trans and nonbinary menstruators. I also have extensive involvement in issues of Indigenous Peoples’ rights, tenant advocacy, and gender and reproductive justice.
This brings me into my active practice of interdisciplinarity, which for me looks like applying my interests and expertise on a wide variety of arenas, yet maintaining a core set of values and principles when doing so. I am an academic and a freelance writer, but I also work in the art world. Specifically, I am the Producer of an upcoming feature film, Cry with Me, and have enjoyed dipping my toe into the worlds of performance art and the intersections of visual culture and human rights. I also moonlight as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Consultant for businesses and organizations hoping to learn more about LGBTQIA+ identities, histories, and how to respect and include these individuals in the workplace.
Outside of it all, I am also the proud pet parent to three animals: my Italian Greyhounds Tenzin and Tibalt and my cat Taavi. These three have seen it all, and they get lots of walks, treats, and cuddles in return. Find their shenanigans and day-to-day updates of my work and life on social media @rowena_kosher.
